1998–2000 — LTCM Cuts, Re-Steepening, and the Four Horsemen
Investors in Q4 1998–early 2000 lived through what felt like a validated new paradigm: Greenspan's productivity thesis, corporate internet capex, and Fed backstops made 'this time is different' feel empirically true. The Nasdaq 100 rose 85% in 1999 alone; Cisco crossed a $500B market cap in March 2000, briefly the most valuable company on earth. Sentiment surveys (AAII bulls, Investors Intelligence) sat near multi-year highs, and margin debt grew 62% YoY in early 2000. Skeptics — Grantham, Shiller, Julian Robertson — were publicly embarrassed; Robertson closed Tiger Management in March 2000 after refusing to buy tech. IPO issuance ran at $69B in 1999 with average first-day pops of 71%. Ex-tech earnings were mediocre — S&P 500 ex-tech EPS grew ~3% in 1999 — but no one cared because the winners were compounding revenue 40%+. What happened next

Then the September 2008 sequence — Lehman on the 15th, AIG on the 16th, WaMu on the 25th — broke the market: the S&P fell from 1,255 on September 12 to 752 by November 20, a 40% move in ten weeks. The final low was 666 on March 9, 2009, a 57% decline from the October 2007 high over 17 months. Energy stocks — the prior-cycle leaders — fell 55%+ from July 2008 highs as crude collapsed from $147 to $32 by December 2008. Financials fell 84% from their February 2007 peak to March 2009.
The S&P 500 made a new all-time high five months AFTER the yield curve began re-steepening in mid-2007, then fell 57% over the next 17 months.
1971–1974
1971–1974 — The Nifty Fifty and the One-Decision Concentration
Portfolio managers in 1972 were told — and largely believed — that quality mega-cap growth compounders would justify any multiple over a long enough holding period. Morgan Guaranty Trust's institutional book was famously concentrated in the Nifty Fifty; being underweight IBM, Xerox, or Polaroid was career risk. Analyst notes emphasized dominant market share, superior returns on capital, and multi-decade growth runways — the language rhymes exactly with today's AI-hyperscaler narrative. Retail participation was elevated after the 1968 speculative peak had already flushed out speculative small-caps; 1971–72 was the 'flight to quality' rally where money crowded into names that had 'worked.' Bond yields were rising and CPI was already at 3.6% in late 1972 heading higher, but equity investors treated the growth names as inflation-immune. Below the surface, EPS trajectories at names like Polaroid and Xerox were flattening even as multiples climbed. When the oil embargo hit in October 1973, the market had already been declining for nine months, but the shock accelerated the process.
What happened next
From the January 11, 1973 peak of 120.24, the S&P 500 fell to 62.28 on October 3, 1974 — a 48% decline over 21 months. But the Nifty Fifty fell far more: Polaroid dropped from $149 to $14 (-91%), Xerox from $172 to $49 (-71%), Avon from $140 to $18.5 (-87%), Disney from $119 to $16 (-87%). Even 'safer' names — Kodak, Sears, IBM — fell 60–70%. The recovery was slow and lopsided: value and small-caps led out of the 1974 low, and it took the S&P until 1980 to make a nominal new high, and until the mid-1980s to make a real (inflation-adjusted) new high. The Nifty Fifty as a cohort did NOT recover to prior peaks for over a decade; a study by Jeremy Siegel later showed that if you bought the Nifty Fifty at the 1972 peak and held for 25 years, you roughly matched the S&P — the multiple contraction was eventually offset by the earnings compounding, but the interim drawdown was brutal and many holders capitulated at the lows.
Polaroid fell 91% (from $149 to $14) between 1972 and 1974 despite growing revenue every year through 1978 — the business was fine; the stock was not.
